Lymphangioleimyomatosis is a metastatic disease that is fatal in the lungs. It is rare and strikes only women, usually in their childbearing years. There is no treatment for LAM, there is no cure. However, there is a great deal of hope that a treatment can be found: At least one of the gene defects in LAM is known. This defect regulates cell growth and migration and has been implicated in many forms of cancer. There is consensus among researchers that LAM can be seen as a dumb, reasonably simple disease that happens to be very useful because it lies at the heart of understanding the regulation of cell growth in other more common diseases. Scientists believe that advances in the understanding of LAM represent a relatively simple opportunity to control this growth pathway, and as a result, teach scientists to block and control most of the pathway involved in many cancers. The result would be new treatments for thousands of people affected by various cancers and a treatment that would save the lives of women with LAM.

  • Excellence, impact and collaboration are our core values.
  • Funding the best and the brightest in particular areas of expertise, we:
    • Sponsor and promote targeted research into LAM with the goal of finding a treatment and/or cure for the disease;
    • Facilitate the education of the scientific and medical communities, as well as the general public, about advances in scientific knowledge relating to LAM by publishing the results of our sponsored research;
    • Sponsor seminars, brainstorming and problem-solving meetings and conferences for the scientific and medical communities about LAM-related research in order to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among experts in various scientific fields relevant to LAM;
    • Conduct any other activities that may be necessary, convenient and incidental to the furtherance of our charitable, scientific and educational purposes.
  • Our mission is to find a treatment for LAM in the fastest time possible by supporting an aggressively funded high-impact research strategy.
  • We match the highest priority research projects with those researchers, labs and institutions best equipped to carry out that work. We recruit scientists, facilitate research collaborations and accept proposals on a rolling basis.
  • Our organization is streamlined and committed to facilitating high-quality and high-impact LAM research through funding scientific awards, supporting increased dialogue and collaboration among LAM researchers and leaders in relevant fields and across disciplines and institutions.
